| Tips on Writing
Letters to the Editor. Letters to the
editor are a newspaper's way of getting feedback
from its readers. While they may only be able to
publish a few of the letters they receive, editors
are influenced by the volume of mail they get on
a given topic. An article or editorial to which
readers respond is more likely to be followed up
with future pieces. MORE |
| Generating
Editorials. Successfully urging a
newspaper to publish an editorial on something
like the Department of Peace legislation is one
of the biggest "wins" a campaign can have. Not
only does an editorial get the word out to the
public and elected officials, but it says that
the newspaper itself endorses the legislation.
An article or op-ed, on the other hand, publicizes
the information, but is not an endorsement by the
newspaper. MORE |
| Getting an Op-Ed
Piece Published. "Op-ed" stands for "opposite
the editorial page." In larger papers like the
New York Times, the op-ed page is the page after
the newspaper's editorials and letters to the editor.
Smaller papers may combine all three on one page:
editorials, op-ed's, and letters to the editor. MORE |
| Writing a Powerful
News Advisory For Your Press Conference. Send
out a Press Advisory to all the contacts on your
press list so that you can excite the media about
covering your news event, and have them put your
conference on their calendar. Follow up with a
call about the advisory and speak further about
the press conference. MORE |
Create an Event and invite the local press. Use
the 2006 Mother's Day "Peace of the Pie" event
as an excellent example of how it is possible to
create both an interesting and informative press
event for local news media.
Example: Congressional
District 6. When several DOP Campaign volunteers
visited Rep. Tom Tancredo's Centennial Office for
the "Peace of the Pie" event, it was
published in three local news media:
Centennial Citizen (circulation: )
Villager (2 articles) (circulation: )
YourHub.com (circulation: ) |

COLORADO RADIO / TALK SHOWS
Appearing on a Radio Talk Show. Once
you've gained some experience around particular issues,
you are ready to approach a radio talk show. Particularly
in smaller communities with limited radio coverage, it's
comparatively easy to pick and choose the shows you would
like to be on. MORE
